Corporate Speak, Surveillance And The Social Squeeze

Are you a fan of how corporations speak to you as a customer or an employee? With the fake platitudes and sue me not parent to child like mantra’s? When I was younger I thought it’s just such an obvious way of trying to control the employees, and to some degree control the customers as well – branding, corporate code, policies etc. – and it is, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also spoken in a language that has been devised and encoded as to not give you any reason to take them to court over it. Ever wonder why it’s exactly the same mantra, and corporate speak in any corporation you go to, despite the varying differences in what the corporations make or sell? It’s basically saying something ferocious masked in a toothless rosy veneer to help you swallow the pill of being dominated on every emotional and intellectual level, leaving your individuality out of the equation. Because you are a worker bee, or an ant coming for more sugar – neither require you to be an individual and if you were, would actually be threatening to them.

The Same Language Everywhere

I often wondered why you wouldn’t want to promote from within the original and independent thoughts and idea’s that could make a company stronger from within, it seemed like such an oversite from my point of view, I remember a friend of mine and I once thought about starting our own consultant firm to help corporations get their heads out of their asses and show them the ways they can improve their company. There are two things wrong with this of course, one, they don’t care about improving their company, only profit and most large corporations only care about shareholder wealth – the other is, that if they take any risk, even as seemingly innocuous as an employee showing enough initiative and imagination to actually start implementing these things, not only does this threaten the status quo that the corporations need to be able to forecast and predict for their shareholders not to panic – but this also creates too much of a legal dilemma that once the employees start doing their own things, they can’t control them anymore and anything that goes wrong will be on their hands, legally. So they all go along with the old propaganda that is neither cunning nor particularly appealing and assume the sheep will fall in line so they don’t have to worry about these things. For a take on how professional culture and dating overlap in PR, see dating advice for pr pros, which highlights some of the same people-skills that corporate life rewards.

With feminism rising to the status it is, brought into the work place even more double speak, it actually created it to be so absurd that nothing that the corporations say to its employees or customers can be offended at all – so carefully constructed to avoid lawsuits and bad publicity. I’m sure everyone hates this speak, but you should get used to it, because it’s coming to an internet and world near you. Have you ever been around someone who works for a corporation that’s drunk too much of the kool aid and starts speaking in corporate sch-peal in public? “We need to action this.”, etc. Well everyone is inundated with it for most of their lives now, so it seems to seep into your subconscious – and soon, corporations won’t be enough for feminists and mangina’s to change, cyber bullying and cyber crimes are the next to come under the social agenda – the focus on it will of course go over board and eventually you won’t be able to say anything online that will either offend another person, or company, and especially not the government. You will be labelled a cyber-rapist, cyber-bully, cyber-racist, or the worst, cyber-terrorist. And eventually the cyber will be dropped and it will conform to everything we do.

Tracking, Identity And The Next Front

Cracked has an article about facial recognition programs that are making their ways into every part of our lives, making us being tracked and watched constantly and with our lemming social sites like Facebook, we’ll be able to be identified and located anywhere at any time by anyone. You can read the article here. The broader implications touch culture and dating too — if you want context on how dating norms differ across places and how privacy expectations vary, read what it’s like dating around the world, which offers perspective on how social norms shift with environment.

At some point there’s going to either be a complete bending over by us as a populace or a point where we stand up and take back our freedom. For those of you trying to protect the rich elite’s bank statements, perhaps you should open your eyes to what the real issues are that will affect how are lives are for the next 50 years and onwards.
